Google released a few new Nest with camera this year, including a wired indoor-only model, a wireless indoor-and-outdoor model, a doorbell, and a camera with a floodlight. We've begun to look at all of them, and in each review, we didn't like how Nest hardware needed a paid subscription to a service called Nest Aware. So what is Nest Aware and do you really need it or not everything will be described in this article.
If you're interested in Google's Nest Cams or Nest Doorbells for your smart home, you've probably heard of nest aware. It's a paid subscription service that you can sign up for to add extra features to these products. So, what do you get when you sign up for Nest Aware, and is it worth the monthly fee?
What Is Nest Aware?
The main benefit of a Nest Aware subscription is that you can keep of your recordings longer. By default, Nest cameras only keep track of events for three hours history. An "event" is a short clip that is triggered by sound or motion. That's fine if you're awake and close to your phone, but it won't work for things that happen overnight or while you're away.
The standard Aware plan keeps track of events for 30 days. Google sells an upgrade called Nest Aware Plus that extends this to 60 days and adds 10 days of continuous video history if you need to see more footage. Just realize that not all Nest cameras can record continuously. The main problem is with cameras that run on batteries.
What Is Nest Aware And What Does It Do?
The biggest benefit is that it can recognize familiar faces. The latest Nest Cams and the Nest Doorbell Battery have built-in AI that can tell the difference between people, packages, animals, and vehicles and send the right alerts. Aware subscribers can teach their cameras to recognize their friends and family members. So instead of getting a message that "someone" is at the door, you'll know if it's Roger, Lakesha, or Stephanie, for example.
Not many people know that Aware can detect smoke and CO alarms by sound, and that it can do this with wired Nest Cams and any Google smart speaker or display in the US. Speakers and screens can also set off alarms when they hear glass breaking.
If you're okay with it, Aware lets the Nest Hub Max act as its own camera. This includes alerts when a person, whether they are known or not, is seen.
Lastly, Aware makes it easier for people in the US to get in touch with a local 911 call center. Most people won't care about this since they can always call emergency services on their own, but it could be helpful if you're out of town. Google's "e911" technology connects you to the 911 dispatch closest to your home, not the one where you are now. Benefits of Google Nest Aware at a glance given below.
- Thirty-day event clip storage. With Nest Aware, recordings of events—such as people or animals seen in areas you've designated—are saved online and available to watch or download for 30 days. Without Nest Aware, these clips are stored for three hours.
- Support for Google's familiar faces feature. This year's Nest cameras are able to distinguish between different faces and learn over time who is typically around to better tailor notifications. Despite being a hardware-level feature, it's only unlocked with a subscription.
- Alerts for the sound of a smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm. Nest cameras and Google-branded smart speakers can let you know if they hear a smoke detector or carbon monoxide alarm go off—as long as you pay for Nest Aware.
How Much Does Nest Aware Cost?
Nest Aware costs $6 per month, or $60 per year if you bill it all at once. Nest Aware Plus costs $12 a month or $120 annually. The pricing model used to be more complicated, but currently, on either tier, a single subscription covers all your cameras and speakers.
Is There A Free Nest Aware Trial?
Yes, Google Nest Aware offers 30 days of a free trial when you set up a new Nest home or Upgrade from the defunct first generation of Aware. Its important to note that trials are only available where Nest aware is sold. So nest aware trial is only available for new device not new account.
How To Purchase Nest Aware?
You can buy Nest Aware as an add-on when you buy Nest cameras. At the time of purchase, customers can create an account under the "Nest Aware Cloud Recording" option to add this service to the device.
This will take you straight to all of the options for length of subscription and cost. Then, customers can choose between yearly and monthly subscriptions.
Subscribe To Nest Aware
The most common method is to go to store.google.com/subscriptions and sign in with your Google and nest aware accounts. There are options to change your payment method, cancel a subscription, or switch from Aware to Nest Aware Plus (and vice versa). You may need to look through menus to get to some options.
If you signed up for Aware through the Google Home app, you have to do everything through the Google Play Store. After you sign in on the web, go to Payments & subscriptions under your profile icon and click Manage next to Aware in the Subscriptions tab.
